Cutting-edge research, innovative startups, and global players – discover what makes Rhineland-Palatinate an international hot spot for life sciences and biotechnology.

Rhineland-Palatinate biotech: homegrown, best in class

Insiders share their perspectives on our most innovative industry.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, we know what opportunities can be made possible through digitizing healthcare – and we have the experience to back it up, too. Our state has driven advances in biotechnology for over 100 years, and we have hosted ultramodern, academic medical research for more than 70 years. When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), an omnipresent topic in the current era, we in Rhineland-Palatinate have already been doing research in this field for 35 years. These are outstanding capabilities that we bundle into progressive projects and next-generation innovation hubs, for example, for developing AI-assisted cardiovascular disease diagnostics or personalized immunotherapy for cancer.

In our state, talented young people will find top conditions for making a career in biotechnology or life sciences. There are over 20 traditional universities, universities of applied sciences, and research institutions here offering a variety of degree and qualification programs connected to biotech. The Biotechnologie-Akademie Rheinland-Pfalz links these programs and boosts exchange with the business sector. The Rhineland-Palatinate state government’s MINT strategy also fosters interest in natural sciences and technology at an early stage so that future demand for skilled workers is met.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the business and scientific research sectors work hand in hand to drive innovation and development in the healthcare sector. One example of this successful cooperation is the Translational Oncology (TRON) institute in Mainz. This organization produced the globally renowned pharmaceuticals company BioNTech, which made history with the first mRNA-based vaccine for COVID-19. We support this type of cooperation through innovation clusters, which simplify the exchange between businesses and research institutions and, in doing so, develop tomorrow’s medicines today.

Medicine, industry, agriculture: biotechnology is as diverse as Rhineland-Palatinate itself. It comes as no surprise then that our history with biotech reaches all the way back to the 19th century. World-renowned, tradition-filled enterprises such as BASF and Boehringer Ingelheim, together with innovative startups, form a strong ecosystem for growth and innovation.

Rhineland-Palatinate makes targeted investments to continue to develop Mainz’s status as a hub for biotech. Approximately 30 hectares of new real estate is being created for business and academic premises, including the biotech campus on the university property. Life Science Zentrum Mainz (LZM; Mainz Life Sciences Center) is already supporting startups and spin-offs with a focus on biotechnology. This support is set to become even more comprehensive from 2027: Investor Kadans Science Partner Germany GmbH is constructing a laboratory and office building there and, once finished, planning to cooperate with LZM.
